About this Event

Introduction to Japanese Stab-Binding Workshop

Discover the Beauty of Handbound Books

Discover the elegant art of Japanese Stab-Binding in this relaxed, hands-on workshop for adults.

Japanese stab-binding is a traditional bookbinding technique that combines beautiful decorative stitching with simple yet effective construction. Originating centuries ago in Japan, this timeless craft transforms loose sheets of paper into beautifully handbound books that are both practical and works of art in their own right.

Whether you're completely new to bookbinding or simply looking to explore a new creative skill, this workshop will guide you through every stage of the process.

What You'll Learn

During the workshop you'll learn how to prepare your book covers and pages, accurately measure and punch sewing holes, and master a traditional Japanese stab-binding pattern to create a beautifully finished notebook or sketchbook.

A Relaxed, Creative Experience

Working in a small group, you'll receive step-by-step guidance throughout the session, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and develop your skills in a relaxed, friendly environment.

What's Included
  • All materials and equipment provided
  • Expert tuition throughout the session
  • A beautifully handbound Japanese stab-bound book to take home
  • Tea, coffee and a welcoming creative atmosphere

Who Is This Workshop For?

This workshop is designed for adults aged 18 and over. Whether you're completely new to bookbinding, enjoy paper crafts, keep sketchbooks or journals, or simply love making things by hand, you'll be warmly welcomed.

The workshop aims to be as inclusive and accessible as possible. If you are a wheelchair user or have any access requirements, disabilities or additional support needs, please get in touch before booking so we can discuss your requirements and do our best to ensure you have an enjoyable and comfortable experience.

Why Learn with The Handcrafted Hen?

At The Handcrafted Hen, every workshop is personally planned and taught by me—an experienced artist and qualified Art & Design teacher with over 15 years' teaching experience, alongside many years spent developing traditional bookbinding and Turkish (Ebru) marbling techniques.

Workshops are intentionally kept small, allowing plenty of time for individual guidance, encouragement and creative exploration. Whether you're a complete beginner or already enjoy making, you'll be supported at your own pace in a relaxed, friendly and inspiring environment.

Continue Your Creative Journey

Japanese stab-binding is just the beginning. Once you've learned the technique, you can continue creating notebooks, sketchbooks, journals, albums and keepsake books using a wide variety of papers and fabrics.

If you've attended The Handcrafted Hen's Turkish (Ebru) Marbling Workshop, you can use your own hand-marbled papers to create completely unique book covers.

Each workshop is designed to complement the others, allowing you to develop new techniques while creating handmade items that are both beautiful and personal.
