Our book choice to start the new year is a historical novel set in working-class London during the 1920s and early 1930s. It follows Kate Goss, a resilient young woman who endures poverty, family cruelty, and the mystery of her father's disappearance after her mother's death. Struggling to survive, Kate finds work at the real-life Bermondsey Bookshop and Reading Room, a unique place where people from different social classes come together through books and learning. Through her experiences at the bookshop, Kate gains new friendships, opportunities, and a broader view of the world beyond the hardships of Bermondsey. As long-buried family secrets emerge and she faces choices about love, loyalty, and her future, Kate must decide whether she can overcome her difficult past and build a better life for herself.
