James Hamilton is known for a "comet-like" energy in live settings, often appearing at open mics and showcases in the US as well as abroad, where he might stop a set mid-way to interact with the audience. His delivery is noted for being "heartfelt" and "enlivening".
Hamilton has been described as having a "jazz dialect," often using "irrational" or "irreverent" phrasing to capture the erratic timing and tangential flavor of his own thoughts. His signature style relies on the palpable passion of his live performance and a creative manipulation of words to create a “fresh and unaffected” sound.
