What will I learn?
This class focusses on clamped resist techniques, known as Itajime and teaches you all about indigo.
Content:
– How to create the three basic folding techniques for preparing fabric for clamp resist dyeing, known as "Kikko" – equilateral triangles, right angle triangles and squares
– How to stitch through your fabric parcels to create resist patterns on kikko folded parcels to create kaleidoscopic pieces
– How to use boards and clamps of different shapes and sizes to create repeating patterns
– How to create different shades of blue by removing and re-positioning boards of different shapes and sizes
– How to dye your fabrics in a genuine indigo vat
– How to set up and maintain your own indigo vat at home
Who is this class for?: Beginner / looking for an introduction to Shibori
Duration: 3 hours
Location: This class is available at the Artist’s studio in Muswell Hill.
What do I need to provide myself?
- Rubber gloves (these must cover the wrist and should be Marigolds or similar)
- A strong plastic bag to take your wet work home in
- An apron/old clothes (as indigo will stain if splashed onto your clothes)
All fabric, thread and dye is included in this class. You are welcome to bring you own fabric to work on if you prefer. If so, it must have been scoured (washed with detergent) to remove any preserving chemicals or bought PFD (prepared for dyeing).
