On the death of her husband, John Elder, Isabella became the sole owner of one of the world's leading shipbuilders. After running the business successfully for almost a year she transferred it to a partnership led by her brother and concentrated her efforts on philanthropy. She eventually agreed to endow the medical faculty of The University of Glasgow on condition that they included women in their teaching, and she observed closely to see that the women did not receive substandard education. Visitors are welcome to come along. Entry is £8 per talk. Should you chose to join the Old Glasgow Club, this will be deducted from the annual membership fee of £35.
