Ely Museum, located in the historic Old Gaol, chronicles the history of Ely and the Fenlands from prehistoric to the 20th century, with roots dating back to 1849. It occupies a restored 13th-century Bishops’ Gaol, offering exhibits on Roman, Saxon, and medieval life.
The museum moved to its current location, the former Bishop’s Gaol, which previously served as a tavern, library, and registrar's office.
The building dates back to the 13th century and served as the Bishop of Ely's prison for 157 years.
Visitors can view original prison cells and examine graffiti left by prisoners on walls.
The museum has a long history of paranormal activity witnessed by staff and guests, Reported activity includes dark shadows, disembodied voices, and playful spirits, often featuring sightings of Civil War-era figures and the infamous "dark lady”
