INTRODUCTION TO STUDIO LIGHTINGLearning to Create with One Off-Camera Flash
A Hands-On Beginner's Workshop
Understand the light. Learn to control it. Create better portraits.
# ONE LIGHT. ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES.
### A Beginner's Guide to Off-Camera Flash
Welcome!
Today we're going to learn one of the most valuable skills in portrait photography: controlling light using a single off-camera flash.
You don't need multiple lights, complicated setups, or expensive equipment to create beautiful professional-looking portraits.
You just need to understand one light.
We'll start by taking the flash off the camera and learning how moving that light changes the photograph.
We'll explore how light direction, distance, height, power, and modifiers affect the appearance of our subject.
We'll also learn how to balance our camera exposure with flash, something that can seem intimidating at first but is actually quite straightforward once you understand the basics.
Using professional White Lightning studio strobes and PocketWizard wireless triggers, we'll work through simple demonstrations and hands-on exercises.
We'll experiment with:
- Positioning the light at different angles
- Understanding light distance and falloff
- Creating soft and dramatic shadows
- Using a softbox and other light modifiers
- Understanding flash power and camera exposure
- Creating different portrait styles using the same light
The objective is simple:
By the end of this workshop, you'll understand how to take one light, place it off camera, and use it creatively to shape your photographs.
Let's get started!
