About this Event
About the Workshop
Join Me Julia Behrens Medical herbalist and Courtney Tyler for an immersive few hours in the stunning Stanmer park as we explore the fascinating kingdom fungi.
This walk will focus on medicinal mushrooms, their unique properties, and how to identify, preserve, and process them to maximize their medicinal potential. Along the way, we’ll also encounter a variety of wild fungi, including edible, toxic, and medicinal species, and discuss key identification features, including tree hosts.
Together, we'll enjoy a medicinal mushroom hot drink in the woods and delve into the fascinating topic of Irish wild medicinal mushrooms.
What to Expect:
• Mushroom ID & Sustainable Foraging: We’ll spend time learning how to identify different wild mushrooms, how to forage responsibly, and take a closer look at medicinal mushrooms and their traditional uses and benefits.
• Preserving & Processing: We’ll explore different ways of preserving and processing mushrooms, with a focus on helping to retain their medicinal qualities.
• Connecting with Nature: If the conditions aren’t right for mushroom foraging, we’ll make the most of our time in the forest. We might explore tree identification, discover other wild plants, or simply slow down with some forest bathing and other nature-based activities.
• Resources to Take Home: You’ll receive notes and some recommended resources to help you continue learning and exploring after the day.
• If the Weather Turns: If the weather makes being out in the woods difficult, we’ll adapt the day rather than let it spoil the experience. We may spend more time around a fire or under shelter, sharing knowledge, having educational chats, tasting things, and having plenty of time for questions and discussion.
What to Bring:
Please dress for the outdoors and come prepared for the weather. Sturdy hiking boots and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Note pad and pen.
Who This Is For
- Curious beginners
- Herbal enthusiasts and plant lovers
- Anyone drawn to coastal, sea and land-based healing traditions
- No herbal experience required
Please note: Finding wild mushrooms depends on the weather and what nature provides on the day, so there may be times when we don’t find as many as we hoped. If that happens, we’ll simply enjoy the forest in other ways — learning about the fascinating relationships between fungi and trees, sharing stories and interesting facts, and taking part in other activities that help us slow down, connect with nature, and enjoy our time in the woods.
This course is part of the 1-year Sunday course, where we focus on a range of herbal medicine topics over 8 Sundays throughout the year. Find out more here.
