Welcome to our new course, the first one of the three upcoming Drawing And Painting With Pastels courses in this academic year's series.
This term we will focus on drawing and painting landscapes, seascapes or townscapes in pastels.In the spring term we will focus on drawing and painting portraits, the human face or a portrait of your favourite animal.
Whilst in the summer term you will be able to choose a subject matter or a theme of your choice, or explore and experiment with mixed media (like watercolour and pastels) to create your own abstract art.Pastels are a great medium used by great masters like Edgar Dega and Mary Cassatt, as well as modern day artists.Working with pastels sits on the boundary between drawing and painting, by applying rich colours directly onto the paper surface without having to use a brush or pallette.
Pastel is a versatile medium for exploring different marks to create different effects, from broad, sweeping strokes of layered and blended colour to precise, detailed marks.
The rich and glowing colours offer a wealth of visual mixing, perfect to draw and paint at the same time.This course is suitable for both beginners and students who have already attended our previous courses and workshops.
You will be under the professional supervision and guidance of our art tutor Marina who will guide you every step of the way.
What do l need:
To learn how to draw and paint with soft and hard pastels is important to have the right textured surface, to be able to layer the tonal values from dark to light and master basic blending techniques.
Textured coloured paper is essential for pastel work, with a physical texture or "tooth" to grip the loose pigment, like Canson Mi-Teintes Touch Paper, or Sannelier coloured paper or Stiflex pastel dark shades paper.
You will need a set of soft and hard pastels, (art brands like Rembrandt, Sennelier, Faber-Castell, Derwent or Carand' Ache), and Derwent pastel pencils. a paper stump for blending, or a piece of pipe insulation foam to smudge and merge colours seamlessly.
A table easel is highly recommended, masking tape, a kneaded eraser, pastel fixative, a pad of tracing paper to protect your pastel paintings, and wet unscented wipes to clean pastel dust of your hands whilst drawing in order to prevent muddy colours spreading onto the paper.
You can purchase your art materials, according to your budget, from many online art retailers like Bromley Art Supplies, Jackson's Art , Argos or other online stores, or if you prefer to do your purchase in person there is a professional art shop' Goslings ' in Sudbury, or TG Jones have a designated art section in their stores., or you might be able to find more affordable materials in the Works.
About your tutor:
Marina T-Harrison has a BA Hons in Arts ( BA in Painting, Electives in Scenography, and Conservation and Restoration) and Master in Arts (MA in Scenography, Theatre Direction Pathway).
Her educational background is built on the values of the University of Arts London, where she completed her education in the arts at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
Marina has been teaching at WSC for several years, on many art courses and workshops.
