Get ready for sweater weather! Dye yarn or an old sweater with rich, solid colors using mild acid solutions, no mordants needed! Learn basic color theory that will enable you to over dye existing colors or start fresh. Bring inspiration photos or samples to inspire your own color mixture. This workshop provides training for mixing acid dyes for use on protein fibers (silk, wool). We’ll discuss how to prepare these fibers for dyeing and how to keep them from tangling or felting. We’ll provide some wool and silk samples; bring an item to dye (wool, silk, or nylon). Some items will be available for purchase. You’ll take home swatches from every vat to start your color library.
Working with acid dyes is like making soup; we’ll be standing and stirring our hot dye vats for most of the class. Once the desired color has been achieved, the rinsing begins. Members can leave their rinsed fibers to drip-dry overnight. No prerequisites. Seated workstations are not available for this workshop, but chairs are available.
Instructor Julia March Crocetto, MFA, began her dyeing journey in 2005, when she desired more color options in her fabric stash. Since then, she’s been teaching workshops in a wide range of fiber media and dye types and loves helping people solve their color challenges.
Wet Studio Attire: Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and closed-toe shoes. Aprons are recommended. Avoid loose sleeves or dangling jewelry that could catch on equipment or get into materials. Long hair should be tied back
