Beginning Screen Print — designed for total newbies! This workshop is split into two days: students sign up for day one, day two, or both, depending on prior experience and interest!
There’s a lot of planning and set-up that goes into making a screen print. On day one you will learn:
How to construct an image—We will look at some prints and discuss how they were made. How many layers are there? In what order were the layers done?
How to plan and prepare to print—Using paper stencils, we will create an image, prepare screens, and set up a press.
Basic registration.
Squeegee technique—How the heck does this thing work?
You will finish the day with a Screen Print Checklist and familiarity with the process and Remarque’s facility.
---
If you already feel comfortable using a squeegee and setting up a press, join us for Day 2 of the Intro Class, when we will learn how to work with photo-sensitive emulsion:
How to coat a screen.
How to make a stencil for photo-sensitive emulsion.
How to burn your design onto the screen.
More squeegee technique!
How to reclaim a screen.
As a beginning class, we will be making stencils by hand. To maximize ink-pulling time, no computer-generated images will be printed. Students are encouraged to approach their image-making with curiosity, flexibility, and teamwork. Together, we’re learning how to do something new! At the end of the day, you will have an understanding of the process of making a screen and pulling ink with your ever-improving squeegee skills. This class will set you up for feeling comfortable working at Open Studio days with some assistance.
