Discover the rich, velvety surfaces and surprising possibilities of oil and cold wax painting in this hands-on introductory workshop. Instructed by @danafrostgrubbe and @jmbellomy, this 6-hour workshop is the perfect opportunity to try a new medium.
Combining the luminosity of oil paint with the soft matte finish of cold wax, this contemporary medium invites experimentation through layering paint, scraping it away, mark-making, and revealing what lies beneath.
Working on oil paper, students will explore abstraction through color, value, texture, edges and composition, to create small abstract studies. Using palette knives, brayers, scraping tools, and found materials, we’ll build and remove layers, create texture, and uncover earlier passages.
Demonstrations and individual guidance will introduce mixing oil paint with cold wax, additive and subtractive techniques, transparent and opaque color, and surface development. A short presentation of contemporary oil and cold wax artists will provide inspiration. No previous oil painting or abstraction experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
