About this Event
Thanks for your interest in LAS110: Introduction to OMTech Laser Cutters! This beginner-friendly course is intended to be a thourogh introduction to some pretty powerful laser cutters, including our 60W and 130W CO2 machines. During this three-hour course, you’ll learn how to operate a laser cutter safely, identify materials that can be cut or engraved, select appropriate settings, and follow best practices for preventing fires.
You’ll apply these skills by designing a veneer layout for an A5 notebook using LightBurn software and one of several provided templates. Along the way, you’ll learn how to import, trace, edit, scale, arrange, and combine design elements. After preparing your file and selecting the appropriate laser settings, you’ll cut the components and assemble, sand, and seal your finished notebook.
Customization is highly encouraged! You may bring a high-contrast black-and-white image, and the instructor will show you how to import and trace it in LightBurn. Several ready-to-use templates will also be available to customize. To ensure the project can be completed within the class period, designs are limited to 10 inlaid pieces. You’ll be able to choose from four species of pressure-sensitive adhesive-backed wood veneer to create your design.
All materials are provided, and no prior laser-cutting or design experience is required.
At the end of the course users will have firm knowledge on the following:
- Basic laser system operations.
- Lightburn software.
- Material hazards and dangers.
- Effects of material density on laser cutting and engraving.
- Basic laser safety.
Hi! I'm Bridger (he/him) and I've been creating for a long time. I have a background in mechanical engineering and love to design, build, and improve projects. When not building you can catch me in the mountains skiing/boarding or hiking. I joined CCM in March and have been using these OmTech lasers to create wood veneer inlays, custom storage systems, and stained glass templates. I'm excited to meet you and answer any questions you have!
