Description: This class is an introduction to hand-sewing and embroidery using Blackwork methods, which is a historic form of embroidery known for its geometric patterns and striking contrast of black thread on light fabrics. Students will learn basic hand-sewing stitches using Renaissance Blackwork to create a personalized bookmark. Examples of Blackwork patterns from multiple countries will be provided as well as a short history lesson about the practice.Skills learned:
- Stitch basics such as the Holbein stitch, backstitching, and compensating stitches
- Counted thread navigation for pattern and chart-reading
- Project finishing including backing and hemming
Prerequisites: No experience is required to take this class; beginners are welcome!
Cost: $40 for non-members, $35 for HackPGH members.

Date and Time: Tuesday, October 20th from 6:00PM to 9:00PM. Instructor will be available after class to help those who need extra help or have more detailed patterns. Free coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and bottled water are all available from our coffee bar during breaks. Other snacks and drinks are available from our vending machines.

Age requirement: Must be ten (10) years or older. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Guardians who are merely accompanying a minor to the class should select the "Minor Child with Parent/Guardian NOT Participating" option, and add the child's info in the guest form.
Any adult wishing to make their own separate speaker alongside their child should choose the discounted "Minor Child Ticket with Parent/Guardian Participating" ticket choice!
