Bridge to the Romantic EraCellist Paul Tseng and pianist Ching-Ming Cheng explore the musical bridge between the Classical and Romantic eras through two powerful works for cello and piano.
Beethoven stood at the threshold of a new musical age, expanding the expressive and dramatic possibilities he inherited from the Classical tradition. His early Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 5, gives both instruments an essential role in a work of striking contrasts, lyricism, and energy. Nearly eight decades later, Saint-Saëns’ Sonata No. 1 in C minor, Op. 32 looks unmistakably back to Beethoven. Completed in 1872, the sonata has been noted for its distinctly Beethovenian character – not only in its choice of C minor, but in its dramatic intensity – while speaking in the richer musical language of the Romantic era. Together, these two sonatas offer a glimpse of one of music history’s great transformations: from the Classical world Beethoven inherited to the Romantic tradition he helped set in motion.
