The International Whisky Festival, held annually at the historic Grote Kerk in The Hague, Netherlands, is a premier event for whisky enthusiasts, offering an extensive introduction to this revered drink often referred to as the 'Drink of the Gods'. First established in 2000, the festival has grown to attract around 6,000 visitors each year, showcasing the passion and culture surrounding whisky. With approximately 50 exhibitors, festival attendees have the opportunity to taste a wide variety of whiskies, including special bottlings exclusive to the festival. Each session lasts four hours, allowing ample time for tasting, learning, and engaging with fellow whisky lovers.Upon entering, visitors receive a tasting glass to sample whiskies from various stands, where many free samples, known as 'drams', are available. For those interested in more exclusive or older whiskies, a fee is charged, payable with festival currency. This currency, also referred to as 'drams', can be purchased at the organization desk, allowing guests to manage their spending easily. Additionally, the festival features a special bottling available only during the event, and attendees can partake in introductory courses that include tastings of both a Single Malt and a Blended Whisky, guided by experienced whisky professionals. The masterclasses, known as Nosing and Tasting, offer a deeper dive into the whisky experience in a dedicated setting within the church.
A unique highlight of the festival is the Haagsche Whisky Tram, transformed from the famous HTM event tram, where visitors can enjoy various whiskies while taking in the sights of The Hague, led by local whisky experts. The Festival Whisky Shop also provides an opportunity to purchase rare whiskies not commonly found elsewhere, ensuring that attendees can take home a piece of the experience. The event promotes responsible drinking, encouraging guests to enjoy whisky in moderation. With a commitment to accessibility, members of the International Whisky Society are guaranteed entry even when sessions are fully booked, excluding VIP sessions. This vibrant festival not only celebrates whisky but also fosters a community of enthusiasts from the Netherlands, UK, and USA, solidifying its place as a key event in the whisky calendar.
