The year 1956 stands as one of the most critical turning points in the social and political history of 20th-century Central and Eastern Europe. On the 70th anniversary of the Polish October, the Pilecki Institute, in collaboration with the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IH PAN), invites you to an international scientific conference exploring the regional impact of this pivotal year. Was 1956 equally transformative for the politics and social dynamics across the entire Eastern Bloc?
To address this question, 32 scholars from around the world - including researchers from Bulgaria, China, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the UK, and Poland - will gather in Warsaw. Bringing together perspectives from history, sociology, political science, anthropology, and cultural studies, the conference will examine the intersection of political transformation and social change using modern methodological approaches such as transnational history, histoire croisée, and connected history.
