About this Event
The Library warmly invites you to an exciting opportunity to interact with the Library’s exhibition, researchers, and archives at an Intergenerational Workshop and exhibition open day.
Following this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day theme ‘Bridging Generations’ and the Library’s current exhibition , we welcome cross generational attendance to inspire conversation around how the Holocaust and Holocaust memory affects generations differently.
Exhibition Tour and Curators’ Q&A (11:00-11:45)
From 11:00 a.m until 11:45 a.m., curators Dr Christine Schmidt, Acting Co-Director of the Library, and Professor Dan Stone, Director of the Holocaust Research Institute at Royal Holloway, University of London, will give a guided tour of the Library’s current exhibition. Hear some of the stories of older Jews during the Holocaust and get a chance to ask questions on the materials on display or the curation process. Register to attend below.
Creative Engagement with Family History – Intergenerational Workshop (11:45 -1:00)
Following the guided tour, the Library’s Digitisation Officer Elaine Woodbridge will deliver an interactive workshop on creative engagement with family memory through stories, objects and heirlooms. This workshop is for all ages, and presents an opportunity for grandparents, parents, and young adults to engage in family memory together. Please bring a photo, small object (up to 20cm) or story that represents someone you would like to remember for use in this workshop.
Elaine will share examples from her own creative practice. She will look at what creative engagement means, the techniques and skills to employ. How to work together with others in a family, and the kinds of challenges that might come up. She’ll also look at how to safekeep original items, create surrogates and plan a creative project. You’ll be able to photograph the item/s you bring using our photography lightbox and start planning a creative project on your own or with family members.
Registration is required for the guided exhibition tour and intergenerational workshop.
From 1pm until 3pm the Library will open the exhibition space and the Wolfson Reading Room to the public. Attendees will have the chance to browse our large collection of literature on the Holocaust and genocide. Members of the Collections Team will be on site to answer questions or retrieve archival materials for reference.
Also on site will be members of the Library’s International Tracing Service team, who will offer free consultation and instruction on use of the Library’s access to the ITS database. The Library is the sole point of access in the UK to the International Tracing Service – a remarkable archive of over 30 million pages of Holocaust-era documents relating to the experiences of over 17.5 million people. Our researchers specialize in navigating these vast numbers of files and can assist survivors, their families, and families of victims in finding information on loved ones impacted by Nazi persecution.
Registration is not required for the open day portion of the event.
