Inside Out and Our Feelings!
An Emotional Literacy Workshop for Moms & Elementary-Aged Kids
Big feelings are part of being human—but understanding what we’re feeling, why we’re feeling it, and how to communicate it takes practice.
Inside Out and Our Feelings! is an interactive workshop designed for moms and their children in kindergarten through 3rd grade to explore emotions together in a fun, approachable environment.
Using Inside Out as a familiar starting point, families will learn about five basic emotions—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust—and explore some of the basics of what happens in our brains and bodies when we experience different feelings.
After watching the movie together, we’ll have a short, kid-friendly conversation about emotions, including the many different words we can use to describe what we’re feeling. Families will then participate in hands-on arts and crafts designed to reinforce what they learned.
Children will leave with tools they can continue using at home to recognize, name, and communicate their feelings—even when finding the right words is hard. Moms will gain shared language they can use with their children to make conversations about emotions a little easier in everyday life.
This workshop incorporates emotional literacy, social-emotional learning, and violence-prevention concepts in an age-appropriate and engaging way.
Who This Workshop Is For
This event is intentionally limited to moms and their kiddos in kindergarten through 3rd grade. Registration is by family, not per person.
Sliding Scale: $25–$60 per family

About the Facilitator
Tonya Valadez, MS has worked in the fields of early childhood education, violence prevention and intervention, special education and self defense since the late 1990s. Her professional experience brings together an understanding of child development, prevention, education, and the importance of giving children practical, developmentally appropriate tools for understanding themselves and communicating with the adults who care for them.

Free two-hour off-street parking is available behind the building. On-street parking is also available nearby, and additional paid parking is available at the Hult Center parking garage.
