SDS and Carer Information Sessions led by LCIL
These sessions are designed to support ethnic minority carers to learn about Self-Directed Support (SDS) and to address some of the significant barriers that carers from ethnic minority communities can face when accessing mainstream services.
The programme is delivered over two sessions, one week apart.
Please choose ONE cohort. Each booking includes both sessions within the selected cohort.
September Cohort
Thursday 17 September and Thursday 24 September

November Cohort
Thursday 19 November and Thursday 26 November
11:00am - 1:30pm
Presented in English and Polish.
What is Self-Directed Support (SDS)?
Self-Directed Support (SDS) is the system used to provide social care support in Scotland.
Any funding allocated to a carer or a disabled person by the Local Authority is provided through the SDS framework. SDS is designed to empower people to have greater choice and control over the support they receive and how it is arranged.

Session 1: SDS and Your Rights
- Introduction to Self-Directed Support (SDS), including social care options, assessment processes, eligibility, and outcomes-focused planning.
- Exploration of how SDS funding can be used, including ideas for short breaks and summer holiday activities.
- Understanding your rights through the SDS Charter of Rights and the SDS Standards.
- Introduction to rights-based approaches to social care.
Session 2: Follow-up, Peer Support and Q&A
- Follow-up discussion and Q&A session.
- Co-facilitated by volunteer peer facilitators with lived experience.
- Guided peer support discussions to build confidence, share experiences, and develop supportive connections.
- Information on further support, services, and next steps.
