Southeast Asia is undergoing a profound transport infrastructure transformation, with rail emerging as the backbone of sustainable urban mobility and cross-border connectivity. Across the region, governments are expanding and modernizing rail networks, developing urban transit systems, and pursuing cross-border linkages to support economic integration.
Indonesia stands at the forefront of this transformation. With a population exceeding 280 million and a national railway expansion target of approximately 14,000 kilometers through 2045 requiring an estimated Rp1,100–1,200 trillion (US$68–74 billion) in investment, the country is undertaking one of Asia's most ambitious rail development programs. Recent milestones include the inauguration of LRT Jakarta's Kelapa Gading–Manggarai route, continued progress on MRT Phase 2A and the East-West Line, and President Prabowo's directive to develop Trans-Sumatra and Trans-Kalimantan networks. The Whoosh high-speed rail, connecting Jakarta and Bandung, continues to set performance benchmarks with a 99.4% on-time departure rate.
Against this backdrop, Indonesia Rail Infrastructure & Technology Summit 2026 (IRITS 2026) , scheduled for December 9–10, 2026 in Jakarta, will convene 300+ rail authorities, operators, technology providers, and investors to address the most pressing challenges and opportunities shaping Indonesia's railway future – from project execution and financing to digital transformation and sustainable operations.
