Sir James Atwood sang a Gregory Porter tribute with his band, The Collective, at the Blue Room on August 29.About this Event
During Sir James Atwood's Blue Room debut at Indigo Hour in June, the sound system went down. He says the set kept going anyway: "We didn't miss a beat. We sang together." By his account, the line ran down the street before the doors opened, and the room was standing room only within 10 minutes.
That August night was a Saturday headline, billed as Sir James Atwood & The Collective, and he closed it out with rhythm & blues. He comes back to Porter in his videos too, with covers of "If Love Is Overrated" and "Real Good Hands."
He calls himself a jazz and soul vocalist, and his covers range well past Porter, to Ray Charles's "I Got A Woman," Sting's "It's Probably Me," and John Legend's "Ordinary People." He's also sung at Classic Blends, a Black-owned cigar lounge in North Kansas City that hosts live music.
