Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration: Celebrating UTA's Land Acknowledgment Courtyard and Mural

Join the Native American Student Association at UT Arlington for an Indigenous Peoples Day celebration honoring the first outdoor mural installed on the UTA campus and four years of the Land Acknowledgment Courtyard.
Four years may not sound like a milestone by Western counting. But in many Indigenous societies, four is one of the most sacred numbers. Four directions. Four seasons. Four cycles of life. It felt right to honor this space at this time, and doing it on Indigenous Peoples Day just felt perfect.
About the mural:
Haley Greenfeather English, an artist of Red Lake and Turtle Mountain Ojibwe heritage, designed the mural. Her work is bold, playful, and grounded in close observation of the natural world. The piece was brought to life on the wall by Professor Carlos DonJuan and his UTA art students. It now lives in the Land Acknowledgment Courtyard, surrounded by the Native plants already growing in that space.
What to expect
Remarks from Haley Greenfeather English about the mural, its imagery, and her work as an Indigenous artist
Recognition of Professor Carlos DonJuan and the students who painted the mural
A guided tour of the Native plants growing throughout the Land Acknowledgment Courtyard
A hands-on art activity open to everyone
A reception with food
This event is free and open to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. Come for part of it or stay for all of it.
Why this matters
The Land Acknowledgment Courtyard is more than a plaque and a garden. It is a place where the history of this land and the people who were here first is kept visible on a campus where Indigenous students are underrepresented. Our hope is that the mural draws more people into this space, and that once they are here, they stop, read the Land Acknowledgment, and carry those thoughts with them.
Hosted by the Native American Student Association at UTA in partnership with the School of Social Work Indigenous Knowledge and Culture Project, the Department of Intercultural Student Engagement, and community partners.
