About this Event
Go behind the scenes of Northern Saw-whet Owl research with Indiana Audubon, in partnership with the Indiana Dunes National and State Park, and Indiana Dunes Tourism. For the 16th consecutive season, we're offering a unique opportunity for visitors to volunteer with our experienced banding staff on select nights. This exclusive experience allows you to assist with the research and banding process, gaining a deeper understanding of our work beyond the regular banding demonstrations.
What to Expect
During the Behind the Scenes experience, participants will assist with net set up and take down, observe hourly owl removal, and witness banding at our outdoor field station. Staff will conduct a minimum of three checks each night. Note that participants must provide their own transportation for the 10-mile round trip each hour.
To ensure a comfortable experience, please bring a lawn chair, snacks, warm clothing, and a flashlight (headlamp preferred). A campfire with s'mores and private kitchen are available for volunteers.
Registration
Please read and agree to the IAS Field Trip Release to participate in IAS led events and trips. The Behind the Scenes fees support Indiana Audubon's ongoining Project Owlnet research.
The registration rates are as follows: Adults pay $50, with a 50% discount for Indiana Audubon members, while Youth (ages 8-17) pay $30. The Behind the Scenes experience is not recommended for children under 8 years old.
