“Christmas Is for Kids was started by the late Doyon President Morris Thompson, who wanted to ensure that children had a present to open at Christmas. Today, employees carry on that tradition through an employee-run program that aims to provide a gift to every child, from birth through age 18, in four to five villages in our region each year. With help from Shareholder Outreach, we track participating villages and rotate communities, so the program reaches more children over time.
Employees organize fundraising events, shop for gifts, wrap presents, and coordinate delivery to the selected villages. Getting gifts to their destinations can involve several stages, including trucking them to Anchorage and arranging airline delivery to the communities, once in a while either the airfare and or the trucking charge will be donated from the company. Each step reflects the teamwork and care that make this program possible.
For employees, the joy begins with shopping and wrapping—seeing the toys, games, and electronics and imagining the excitement on each child’s face as they open their gift. Christmas Is for Kids brings us together, helps us embrace the Christmas spirit, and makes this a special time of year,” said Micah John, Doyon Facilities Manager
