We are pleased to welcome India Hicks and her son, Amory Flint Wood, back to the Ukrainian Institute of America for a conversation about their humanitarian missions to Ukraine with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM)—what inspires them to go, the people they have met, and their personal experiences and reflections from their time on the ground.
India and Amory will be in conversation with Katya Soldak, Kharkiv-born journalist and editorial director of Forbes Media's international editions, and director of the documentary “The Long Breakup”, which chronicles Ukraine's struggle for independence through the experiences of her family and friends.
The event will include an audience Q&A, followed by a light reception. Advance registration is requested.
India Hicks is a British designer, author, entrepreneur, and humanitarian whose career spans fashion, interiors, and lifestyle design. The daughter of celebrated interior designer David Hicks, she has authored several books, modeled for Ralph Lauren, and collaborated with leading fashion and lifestyle brands.
Alongside her creative career, India has devoted considerable energy to humanitarian work, including disaster relief efforts in the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian. She serves on the Executive Board of Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), an international humanitarian organization providing emergency relief and longer-term recovery assistance to communities affected by disasters and conflict.
Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, India has made numerous humanitarian missions to the country with GEM, personally helping deliver aid and meeting with communities affected by the war. She has sometimes been accompanied by her sons, including Amory Flint Wood, who has joined her on several missions. As of a recent account, India had made ten visits to Ukraine and Amory four. Their shared experiences offer a deeply personal perspective on the human impact of the war and the importance of continued humanitarian support.
