* Starts at the Woolston Millennium Garden
* Lasts around 2 hours
* Numerous 5* reviews
During this fascinating 2 hour tour, our guide Geoff will explain a little more about the wider role Southampton played in the Second World War, focusing on the year 1940, the ‘Year of Destiny’. The destruction of the Supermarine Spitfire factories in Woolston, and the Blitz nights of 30th November and 1st December brought home the true reality of war against civilians and the possibility of invasion.
This casual paced, 2 hour walk will focus on the establishment of the Shadow Factories and the mobilisation of the population to defend their homeland, which would eventually lead to victory in 1945.
The walk will start at the Woolston Millennium Garden, Bridge Road, Woolston SO19 9RH and will finish outside The Victoria pub in Woolston (a 2 minute walk back to the start of the tour) to admire the new mural painted on the side of the pub to commemorate the Spitfire and its links to the city.
"May I take a moment to praise the guide who took the Spitfire tour in Woolston yesterday. Geoff went above and beyond to ensure our group had the best possible experience and the effort he put into making us all interested and happy was amazing. 10/10"
