Mosaic Vocal Ensemble will present an inspiring and eclectic choral program, “In the Beginning,” at the beautiful Christ Episcopal Church in Eureka. There will be two performances, one on Friday, November 6th at 7:30 p.m. and the other on Sunday, November 8th at 4:00 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door. The upcoming concert explores the idea of beginnings and endings. The centerpiece of the program is quintessential American composer Aaron Copland’s work, “In the Beginning.” Although it is less known than some of Copland’s more famous works, many consider it to be his masterpiece. Written in 1947, the piece is a substantial a cappella work for chorus and mezzo-soprano soloist, inspired by the first chapter of Genesis in the Bible. Though the text is familiar, the way he sets it is unique, with vibrant visual images and exciting harmonies.
The program also includes early works by Spanish Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria’s slowly building motet “O magnum mysterium” and Felix Mendelssohn’s lyrical “Die Primel.” Additional works include contemporary pieces by Jennifer Lucy Cook, Josephine Poelintz, and Shawn Kirchner’s “Heavenly Home,” a contemporary arrangement of early American songs that pay homage to the original tunes while showing the composer’s affection for infusing newly composed material that contain folk, Baroque and bluegrass influences.
We are thrilled to share this exciting program with a Humboldt audience!
