About this Event
How is immigration policy being felt here in the Fredericksburg region? What do we know about the role of local institutions, and what can we learn from one another?
Join the League of Women Voters of the Fredericksburg Area for a thoughtful, nonpartisan Community Conversation with Jorge Mendez of Virginia Organizing and Dr. Eric Bonds of the University of Mary Washington.
Together, we’ll explore local dimensions of immigration enforcement and detention, including questions raised by recent reporting on Rappahannock Regional J*il’s relationship with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Caroline Detention Facility in Caroline County. We’ll consider how these issues touch the lives of individuals, families, and the wider community.
Jorge and Eric will help ground the discussion in reliable information, offer context from their work, and answer questions. At the heart of the gathering will be conversation among neighbors: an opportunity to share perspectives, listen to one another’s experiences, and develop a fuller understanding of what is happening close to home.
We recognize that this subject is deeply personal for many people. Everyone is invited to participate with care, curiosity, and respect for each person’s dignity. Share only what you feel comfortable sharing; coming to listen and learn is welcome, too.
No prior knowledge or League membership is needed. Bring your questions and a willingness to hear from your neighbors.
