Illusion of Safety Since 1983, Daniel Burke and his many conspirators under the Illusion Of Safety banner have over the course of 40+ full length releases traversed most every facet of the avant sound plane, from early industrial pop deconstruction to blindingly minimal sound art to densely surreal found-sound collage, each unique approach bending and reconstituting the expectations and possibilities of each realm, creating uneasy music that is dense and dystopian and yet also beautiful. Performing over 300 live concerts throughout Europe and the states included No Fun 2008, the Wroclaw Industrial Music Festival 2009, Sonic Circuits in 2010, with Shen Wei Dance Arts in 2011 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, and at the Crisis Data Transfer Pre-Party October 2023. Outside of IOS Burke has collaborated with Jim O’Rourke, Jon Mueller, Randy Greif, Darin Gray, Z’EV, Cheer-Accident, Thomas Dimuzio, Kevin Drumm, Bill Horist, and others.

Heavy Pauses (Faren release party)

On Faren, Heavy Pauses enters a gentler register, finding a meeting point between density and tenderness. Two improvisations, each around forty minutes, unfold as immersive and expansive sound environments. Its gravity forms a rift, allowing interior worlds to emerge. The result is not a departure from the group’s vicious synthesizer music, but another way of inhabiting it.
The St. Louis quartet of Chris Boron, Mike Broy, Chris Smentkowski, and Rick Wilson describes its music as “drone dense synth transportation rituals.” Here, transportation is less about movement than surrendering to time. The music stretches out, leaving room to linger, wander, and listen.
Recorded live and subtlety mixed by Smentkowski and Wilson, Faren preserves the natural essence of the performances. Nothing has been artificially reshaped for easier consumption; the pieces’ duration belongs to the psyche of the recording. Andy Ortmann’s mastering complements that approach, bringing the music’s depth and dimensionality into focus while preserving its restraint.
The album takes its name from Rick Wilson’s daughter, Faren, who lived with Trisomy 18. In the peculiar mythology of SkareKraüRadio, she held the role of a chaos deity. Heavy Pauses shares both history and a strange sensibility with Skarekraü, making the album an extension of that shared past, with a tribute Faren at its transcendental core.
Released by NNN Cook’s Close/Far Recordings, Faren is accompanied by Cook’s composed artwork—flowers and plants he collected from his yard and alleyway and arranged as a memorial for Faren—which carries a faint echo of 4AD’s atmospheric aesthetic translated into a distinct, minimalist visual language. Rather than explaining the music, the artwork offers another point of entry: an invitation to spend time with an object, an image, and the sounds.
Faren is released on CD by Close/Far Recordings in October 2026.
