Biofluorescence occurs when organisms absorb sunlight and transform it, emitting the light as a different frequency or colour. The broad range of colours are usually viewed best under UV light. It occurs in insects, plants, fungi and even some species of bird and mammal, but the extent of its presence in nature is still a voyage of discovery.
Now you can help with that journey too.
The RSPB has now launched a series of Illuminate guided walks at its reserves across the UK, including Sherwood Forest.
As you walk through the forest after dark with our guides, you will use the torchlight to pick out biofluorescence in nature and get a whole new perspective on the species that live here.
Different animals and plants fluoresce differently, while some don’t at all.
There is so much more to discover about this exciting branch of science and you can be part of it.
