Ikebana (flower arranging) is embedded in Japanese culture and started with Ikenobo. Its recorded history dates back to 1462, beginning with Buddhist priests making floral offerings at the altar of the Rokkakudo Temple in Kyoto, Japan. The philosophy of Ikenobo was compiled by Senko Ikenobo in the mid-16th century, teaching that “Not only beautiful flowers but also buds and withered flowers have life, and each has its own beauty. By arranging flowers with reverence, one refines oneself.” Ikenobo’s styles have evolved over time, but the belief that flowers reflect the beauty of nature and feelings in one’s heart remains central to arranging.Bring some of nature’s beauty into your home and create a floral arrangement with a Japanese flair, reflecting the “less is more” motto. Students will learn techniques that can be used in future arrangements with flowers of any season.
This class is designed for individuals with limited to no experience arranging flowers. Students will be given a very brief history of Ikenobo Ikebana and shown examples of arrangements and styles. A demonstration of an arrangement, with an explanation, will be provided. Students will then be provided flowers and a vase to arrange their own creation, with guided practice from the Sensei. Following completion, a review and pictures of the arrangements will take place. Participants are able to take home their arrangements.
