About this Event
New York City is a living archive, its buildings tell the story of who we were, who we are, and who we're becoming. As the demand for housing, community space, and sustainable development grows, designers are increasingly tasked with one of the field's most compelling challenges: honoring what already exists while reimagining what it can be.
Adaptive reuse isn't just a design strategy - it's a philosophy. It asks us to look at a forgotten warehouse, a shuttered factory, or an aging office tower and see not what it was, but what it could become. It challenges us to balance historic integrity with modern function, sustainability with aesthetics, and community identity with forward-thinking design.
This year's Pioneering Design theme brings together interior designers, architects, and creative professionals to explore the intersection of preservation and innovation right here in New York City - one of the greatest laboratories for adaptive reuse in the world. It will help us to explore how the spaces we inherit shape the work we do ,and celebrate the role today's designers play not just in honoring New York's history, but in writing the next chapter of it.
