About this Event
The idea of guilty pleasure invites us to consider the things we enjoy despite and sometimes because of their perceived cultural, moral, social or intellectual undesirability. It could be a cheesy romance novel, a reality TV show you would never admit to watching, some junk food you secretly love to eat, listening to endless celebrity gossip, spending an insane amount of time on social media or a song you love but somewhat embarrassed to admit. Our guilt occupies an interesting space between our desires and social approval and between enjoyment and others’ judgement.
Hosted at the Patricia A. Whelan Performance Hall at the Central Library, this event features engaging lightning talks that illuminate the stories, ideas, and experiences about desire, pleasure, emotions, and approvals. Whether you’re curious about design, history, psychology, culture, literature or the unexpected, Phoenix Rising will inspire.
Delivered in partnership between Calgary Public Library and Mount Royal University's Faculty of Arts, the Phoenix Rising series offers an ongoing program of engagement and support in celebration and advocacy for the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Creative Arts.
