Event description;

Eating disorders (EDs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) frequently co-occur, creating complex challenges for assessment, treatment planning, and continuity of care. Despite this overlap, treatment is often fragmented, with interventions addressing one disorder while inadequately accounting for the other. This workshop will examine the current literature on co-occurring EDs and SUDs and provide clinicians with an evidence-informed framework for assessment, case conceptualization, and interdisciplinary treatment.

Participants will review epidemiological and diagnostic considerations, available screening and assessment tools, and limitations of current approaches. Clinical case examples will be used to illustrate common treatment challenges and facilitate discussion of strategies for addressing competing or overlapping treatment priorities. Particular attention will be given to collaborative, multidisciplinary care and the coordination of treatment across mental health, medical, nutritional, and substance use providers. Participants will leave with practical strategies for strengthening communication among providers, improving continuity of care, and developing coordinated treatment goals that address both eating disorder and substance use symptoms.

Objectives:

1.      Identify key epidemiological, diagnostic, and clinical considerations associated with co-occurring eating disorders (EDs) and substance use disorders (SUDs). 

2.       Evaluate evidence-based screening and assessment tools for EDs and SUDs, including their clinical applications and limitations in individuals presenting with co-occurring symptoms. 

3.      Develop an interdisciplinary treatment plan that incorporates strategies for coordinating care, aligning treatment goals, and improving communication among providers treating individuals with co-occurring EDs and SUDs.

If the activity is dietetics related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (1 hour/60 minutes = 1 CPEU). RDs and DTRs are to select activity type 102 in their Activity Logs. Performance Indicator selection is at the learner’s discretion.

Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs.

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, CE Learning Systems is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit.
