Discover the abundance and diversity of Japanese hand-crafted everyday items through a gallery tour led by Hyakkō: 100+ Makers from Japan curator, Nagata Takahiro. The exhibition brings together nearly 2,000 pieces by 123 makers. The objects made from materials including clay, wood, bamboo, glass and metal have been crafted by makers who are often self-taught rather than belonging to established craft families. They work in small workshops scattered across Japan to master their techniques and discover their own individual style often informed by Japanese tradition.
During the tour, Nagata Takahiro explores the diversity, originality, and material qualities of the works, while offering insight into the curatorial process behind the exhibition. He also unpacks the glossary of Japanese craft termsfeatured in the exhibition : from wabi-sabi to asobi. These words have been selected to offer context and insight, helping to deepen understanding and appreciation of modern Japanese craft aesthetics.
This event offers a final opportunity to experience the exhibition through a curator-led tour.
