When twelve-year-old Regan MacNeil begins exhibiting increasingly disturbing behaviour, her mother Chris turns to doctors for answers. As medical explanations fall away and the events inside their Georgetown home become impossible to dismiss, she seeks help from a Catholic priest struggling with his own faith.
Directed by William Friedkin and adapted by William Peter Blatty from his novel, The Exorcist grounds its supernatural horror in something painfully human. Grief, guilt and helplessness take hold long before the bed starts shaking, with hospital procedures that feel almost as invasive as the evil occupying Regan’s room.
Released in 1973, the film became a cultural phenomenon and the first horror film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Beneath the head-spinning, pea soup and blasphemy are extraordinary performances from Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair and Jason Miller, making every escalation feel like something happening to people you’ve come to care about.
