About this Event
War is now raging in Kauda (Nuba Mountains, Sudan) as the government and rebels fight over gold. Drones have hit schools and fighting has burnt markets and schools. People have tried to flee.
There is already starvation in the region and it will be almost impossible for people to survive famine in 2027. Our film is about the long histories of wartime starvation in the Nuba Mountains (Sudan).
Despite the region’s high fertility and it being a major food global exporter, people have suffered repetitive famines over the last four decades because of armed conflict and battles for gold and land.
It is not only that tens of thousands of lives have been lost, but many were also left unburied, undermining their humanity in life and death. At the same time, people of the mountains have shown incredible tenacity and innovation in their attempts to survive and preserve hope and dignity.
It was filmed in Kauda in 2025. Since the war broke out again in Kaura, we are still trying to confirm the safety and wellbeing of everyone in the film.
A panel discussion will follow the film screening, including Nuba Mountains (Sudan) community members - Mrs Aroma Kunda, Mr Kuwa Bargil, Mr Anwar Salem, and University of Bath Researcher Naomi Pendle.
This event is part of the Festival of Social Science 2026
