Umpqua Bird Alliance and Roseburg Public Library invite the public to “The Northern Peru Hummingbirds” presented by naturalist and video photographer Serge Queant at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7.The free public program will be offered in person only at the library, 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd.
Queant will take attendees on a tour of eight well-known hummingbird reserves in northern Peru featuring 35 species of hummingbirds. See the largest and the smallest to the rarest and most beautiful of hummingbirds through his amazing video photography.
Part two of the program will feature an assortment of birds that includes the Inca tern, the Humboldt penguin, the Andean condor, the rare diademed sandpiper, and the most colorful of all tanagers, the paradise tanager.
Queant was born in Paris and became a naturalist when his eyes were opened to wildlife when he had a video camera in his hands. After college, he became an ethologist and studied a captive group of 11 chimpanzees for nine years, documenting their social behavior in comparison to those in the wild. Next he sought out snakes throughout Europe and North Africa, and in 1976 he took his camera to the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.
For five years Queant studied international gastronomy and ended up being the Executive Chef of the World Trade Club of San Francisco and a guest Chef in the White House. In 2005 he retired to Roseburg, where he discovered a fascination for the avian world and has been an avid birder ever since.
