Landmines and unexploded bombs make huge areas of former war zones too dangerous to use, and clearing them is slow and risky. In this talk, Tønnes Nygaard will explain how humanitarian demining works today. He will show how robots and AI could make it faster and safer, with examples from his own work, including a current project in Ukraine.
Speaker
Tønnes Nygaard designs and builds robots, and develops the AI that lets them operate in difficult real-world conditions. His main focus is humanitarian demining, with the aim of making former conflict zones safer to live and work in.
He is an Associate Professor in Robotics at the Department of Technology Systems at UiO, where his work also covers search and rescue, and defence applications. He holds a PhD in robotics, is a certified humanitarian deminer, and works to bring advanced robotics and AI out of the lab and into the real world.
