Take a journey from loneliness to human connection with this collection of LGBTQ dance performers/scholars from Ann Arbor, Michigan! We seek to define partnering, understand what it means in a traditional sense, and find ways to subvert the status quo -- while building meaningful connection between performers and communities. The movement concepts and ideas for “Human Connection” have been building for over 2 years within Dance Uprising’s body of work as well as in the bodies of the dancers themselves. The choreographic process for this work began in earnest in the spring of 2026. We utilize a movement form called Nontraditional Partnering, in which the roles of base and flyer are often interchangeable. Our choreographic process combines rigorous modern dance training with partnering and idiosyncratic movement development to create a totally unique piece.
Research based dance choreography and performance is built upon informative articles, books, podcasts, and other media resources. These text and audio based selections inform our idiosyncratic movement development, relationship building between dancers on the stage, and the overall milieu in which the choreography takes place.
In addition to the choreography itself, several production elements have gone into the development of this show. The sound score for this work features a piece written and performed by Detroit-based musician Max Popkin, as well as found sound. These are edited together to create a bespoke soundscape as the dancers perform onstage. Costume design for this work includes hand-painted costume pieces as well as thoughtfully curated items.
We invite the Canton public – youth and adults alike – to join us for our debut Canton performance, supported by Village Arts Factory funding this year. Thank you for supporting the performing arts!
