About this Event
In today's fast-paced world of genetics, scientists around the world are creating a tremendous amount of DNA data. Unlocking the power of this data requires a specific skill set and a keen understanding of using databases and conducting sequence comparisons.
Through “Genes & ConSEQUENCES” students learn to access the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database, and use the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) to compare their sequences to gene segments published in the database. This activity uses a case study approach, in which students continue to explore their sequences as they work to determine the location and role of their gene in a disease. This kit is designed to continually reinforce the central dogma of biology and give students basic knowledge of these database tools. This online workshop will give teachers the tools and support they need to confidently use this kit in their classrooms.
Registration is at no cost* to Alabama Life Science Educators. Upon successfully completing the program, participants will receive a Genes & ConSEQUENCES kit.
*Registration for Alabama public school teachers is subsidized by the Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Legislature.
This virtual interaction will be from March 3 - April 18, 2025 for participants to work at their own pace. For this session, we will have an initial required virtual meeting and then work independently each week in Google Classroom. We will email registrants important preworkshop information before the event.
Upon conclusion of the session, certificates will be provided documenting eight (8) hours of professional learning, if requested on the registration. Alabama educators, this session is eligible for PowerSchool credit.
All participants are required to agree to HudsonAlpha's media release upon registration. You may review the media release here.
