Right from their inception in 2011, HowellDevine burst onto the scene as the most exciting blues trio in Northern California - actually it is hard to think of a more outstanding blues trio anywhere.
Despite the recent sad and untimely passing of drummer Pete Devine, HowellDevine has already shown that it will continue to be a great band. It is true that a big part of their propulsive drive and incandescent style that defines this group came from Pete Devine's unique drumming - a looser, anything-might-happen quality that somehow co-existed with the necessarily firm foundation that blues requires. But it is also true that Pete's energy, style, and attitude has become an indelible part of the band's sound, even when they turned to other drummers, as they often had to these last two years when Pete was too ill to play. Mostly this has been J Hansen (a very fine and very experienced blues and roots drummer). When J listens to the other two players, he is indirectly absorbing Pete's contribution to the arrangement, and to the groove. So even with Pete gone, his influence remains strong, and as the band has written about Pete on their website, "This music, and this band, will always carry him with us."
The triple-threat centerpiece of the group is Josh Howell. He is definitely a good enough guitarist to play with any blues band anywhere, and even if he couldn't sing and had never seen a harmonica, he would be a valuable asset. But in fact, he is also a true master of the blues harmonica. And even if that was all he could do, there are not many bands that could turn him away. His complete understanding of this small but mighty instrument allows him to find soulful melodies and heartfelt rhythms. On top of that, he is also the band's only singer. And no, that isn't a problem, because, again, even if he couldn't play a note, his expressive voice, attuned to the nuances of blues and R&B history, is more than enough to carry the day.
Bassist Joe Kyle, Jr. an outstanding musician, not because of his nimble-fingered technique (although he does have that) and not because of his deep knowledge of how this instrument can serve a variety of different styles and genres (although he has that too). No, there are two things that he brings to the table that elevate him to a very high level. One is his tone. A big fat sound that is also distinctly percussive, it firmly anchors the band. But that tone doesn't weigh him down. He can dance with it when he wants to, and like a heavy man who is unexpectedly light on his feet, he is graceful in his rhythms. And thing #2: he knows his power. And he knows that blues is often best served by the notes you don't play. His bass playing has nothing to prove. It is just THERE - massive, patient, often repetitious but never boring, providing that deep foundational rhythm.
