How to Investigate Local Government: Research & Public Records Workshop

Want to know how journalists find the records, data and documents that help uncover what’s really happening in local government?
Join Wausau Pilot & Review founder and publisher Shereen Siewert and Wausau's Independent columnist Tom Kilian for Digging Deeper: A Local Investigative Research & Public Records Workshop, a free, practical session designed to give residents the tools to conduct their own local research.
The workshop begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Wausau Community Room on the second floor of the Marathon County Public Library, 300 N. First St., Wausau.
Kilian will share his approach to investigative research — from developing an initial theory or question to finding the data and documentation needed to test it. He’ll walk through specific research tactics and real-world examples of the kinds of insights those methods can produce.
Siewert will focus on Wisconsin public records and the practical tools journalists use to investigate local government and public institutions. Topics will include:
• Where to look for public records
• How to determine which agency or official has the information you need
• How to write an effective public records request
• What to do when records are difficult to obtain
• How to evaluate documents and recognize what matters
• How to use public information responsibly
You do not need to be a journalist or have any previous research experience. The workshop is intended for anyone interested in understanding local government, finding reliable information and asking better questions — including residents, journalists, advocates, policymakers and community leaders.
The event is free and open to the public.
Siewert and Kilian recently received a first-place Wisconsin Newspaper Association award for environmental reporting for their investigative work examining local contamination.
The workshop is being held at the Marathon County Public Library, but the library is not a sponsor of the event.
