Building new affordable apartments cost $400,000 per unit. Holders of four of the top 5 most in-demand jobs in Ramsey County cannot afford the average apartment, much less home ownership. A hundred years ago, between 1/4 and 1/3 of the citizens of St. Paul lived in boarding houses, residential hotels, or rooms for let. We need new models for housing!
On August 5th, Mayor Kaohly Her evicted 250 residents of the Pigs Eye homeless camp. Of the 250, 7 went to shelter and 150 moved to the Shepard Road encampment. Why is a tent community outdoors better than a shelter? We need new models for shelter!
We are working with the Stop the Sweeps coalition and our first invited speakers are Fox and Jessie, who live at the Shepard Road homeless encampment. The first new model we will explore is the groundbreaking Avivo Village shelter in Minneapolis explained by David Jeffries. Tiny Homes are spreading across the metro, and Deborah Cordes from Prince of Peace in Roseville will speak on their Sacred Settlement. Manufactured homes are moving beyond stigma to offer important housing options for the future; to be described by Natividad Seefeld, the president of the Park Plaza Cooperative in Fridley. We will also have the latest state and federal policy updates from MICAH Executive Director Sue Watlov Phillips.
