Are high gas prices breaking your bank? Did you spend a considerable amount of time in the grocery store deciding if you were going to purchase meat products or not? The war is breaking the backs of Americans across the nation. A majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. The smallest inconvenience can have devastating effects on working class families which could land them in a tough spot - being homeless and having to restart over. With the current minimum wage being at $7.25 and the average cost of housing for a modest apartment, individuals are working overtime to pay rent and get by. As the richer get richer, the poorer are getting poorer. Although voting is not going to make immediate changes, it is ONE small way to start voting out public elected officials who do not represent the working class and disadvantaged and voting IN ones that are willing to sit down, listen, and create a strong Housing First Approach policy including raising the minimum wage and making affordable housing a top line budget priority.
Every one deserves the right to housing no matter what their circumstances may be. We are encouraging our community members to show up, commit to vote, and make it to the polls.
In the meantime, we will be handing out winter essentials to our houseless community members and also providing rides to the polls during this event. Show up, bring a friend, and let's do this.
