Step beyond the ordinary and into the strange and spectacular world of Harry Houdini as we mark 100 years since the legendary escape artist's death in Detroit. 🎪✨ Throughout the museum, live magic contortion, hula-hoop performance, and other unusual entertainment will evoke the vaudeville stages, sideshows, and popular entertainments of Houdini's era—all along with savory bites, sweet treats, wine, beer, and a signature cocktail.
🎟️ Detroit Historical Society historian Brendan Roney will pull back the curtain on Houdini's Detroit story, exploring Houdini’s appearances in the Motor City, his rise to international fame, and the final days that forever linked his story to Detroit.
🎭 Nathan "McScary" Wakefield – a variety performer and entertainment historian – will turn the spotlight to Houdini the entertainer. He'll explore the showman's lasting influence from the stage itself, blending history with demonstrations of sideshow arts, including sword swallowing.
🗝️ Magician and escape artist Anthony Grupido will take the stage to channel Houdini's daring and showmanship through a series of astonishing escapes.
