At Bierhalle, 124 Davey Street, Hobart, every Thursday from 7-10pm-ish, the HOT CLUB OF HOBART Gypsy Jazz Jam brings the swinging 1930s Hot Club style of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli to life.Hosted by Charlie McCarthy, this weekly session is a welcoming space for musicians of all ages to develop real-world improvisation skills. By blending guided learning with open jamming, participants move beyond charts, build shared repertoire, and grow confident in listening, interaction, and musical risk-taking. It’s ideal for classical or trad/folk players looking to expand their horizons in a fun, supportive environment.
The first hour is a guided jam and group lesson with charts provided, focusing on 1–2 core tunes each week to develop timing, form, soloing, comping, and interaction. This entry-level format is open to all ages and experience levels, making it perfect for beginners while allowing more seasoned players to refine fundamentals. Suitable instruments include guitar, violin, viola, cello, upright bass, accordion, melodica (for keyboard players), clarinet, banjo, mandolin, and muted brass/winds (no percussion). After the first hour, the session opens into a true jam, emphasising listening, memory, communication, and creative freedom.
All resources are provided, it’s free and fun! Contact Charlie McCarthy at [email protected] for more info.
