Horse Lords formed in Baltimore in 2010 and quickly emerged from the city’s adventurous noise and experimental rock scene. The quartet—Sam Haberman (drums), Owen Gardner (guitar), Max Eilbacher (bass), and Andrew Bernstein (alto saxophone)—build hypnotic, rhythm-driven music that blends minimalism, just intonation, and global rhythmic traditions with the pulse of instrumental rock. Over sixteen years of touring they’ve released ten albums and collaborated with composer Arnold Dreyblatt for RVNG Intl.’s FRKWYS series. With several members now based in Germany, the band continues expanding its sound, performing ambitious works such as interpretations of Julius Eastman alongside their own compositions. Their album Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive! broadens the ensemble with winds, brass, and voices, drawing inspiration from figures like Vladimir Mayakovsky, Anni Albers, and Henry Flynt while channeling influences ranging from Appalachian folk and James Brown to experimental electronic music.
Magic Tuber Stringband explores the hidden histories and landscapes of the American South through adventurous acoustic music. The trio—fiddler Courtney Werner, guitarist/organist Evan Morgan, and bassist/banjoist Mike DeVito—are leading voices in a new wave of avant-composition built from traditional folk instrumentation. Their album Heavy Water reflects Werner’s ecological research at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, where communities were displaced during the Cold War to build a nuclear weapons facility. The music evokes both environmental damage and resilience, blending dense string textures, field recordings, and improvisation. Moving between delicate folk melodies and tense sonic collages, the trio create a powerful meditation on landscape, memory, and the lasting human and ecological consequences of industrial power.
