Step into the everyday life of a mid‑19th‑century rural community at Graue Mill. In this month’s Homeschool Historians program, students will explore how families in the 1850s earned a living, purchased goods and services, and managed the economics of frontier life in what is now modern‑day Oak Brook.Young historians will learn how local families relied on farming, milling, and skilled trades to support themselves, and how the general store served as the center of community commerce—where people bartered crops, handcrafted items, and labor for the supplies they needed.
After a guided tour, students will “shop” at our recreated general store, practice bartering for ingredients, and then make and bake traditional cornbread—just as families once prepared meals in rural DuPage County.
Ages 8–16. Cost: $10 per student.
Register on ActiveNet or call 630‑850‑8112.
We’d love to have your homeschoolers join us! Encourage your students to come ready to ask questions, make discoveries, and imagine themselves as young settlers in the 1850s. Their curiosity and participation help bring history to life.
